Fight Against the Bandits "Regular Duel" Public Critique Encouraged
Winner: ~
energy123049 energy123049 - Putting dialog into speech balloons allows you to fill-in the empty space but also organize what you write. And when you come to the fight scenes, try letting go a bit. In most action scenes, movement should be fluid. Your scenes are a bit constrained. So you can try stretching out the bodies you draw and dramatizing their movements and even drawing the scenery reacting to the movements to help the scene come alive:
[link] . Osirium - squishing three pages into one medium-sized image probably wasn't a good idea. It smooshes a lot of the details and makes it difficult to read the dialog. The paneling is innovative though and your action scenes are well-done (just keep working on proportions and perspective). Next time try to give each page a better presentation and allow them to be at a bigger size.

2inK At first glance, both of these comics are difficult to understand but ~
2inK's lines are clean and the duel in general is easier to read. ~
vulpespyro, it would be wise to rely more on your own art and less on photoshop's bells and whistles. Clean lineart and well-organized panels will get you farther than lens flare.

Winner: ~
CrimsonTranquility This was probably the most difficult duel to judge out of the batch. Both entries were unfinished and while *
ryuuen's pages were impressive, his side of the duel ended before the fight even began. ~
CrimsonTranquility's duel might not have been as visually impressive as *
ryuuen's but it was obvious that she put forth her best effort and tried to get it all in by the deadline. Also, ~
CrimsonTranquility, if you are going to duel traditionally and scan without much photoshop adjustment, I would suggest inking your lines by hand before scanning in order to improve the quality of your comics.

ryuuen Both duelists submitted strong entries and ~
Niseng's color scheme is very appealing. However, for two OCs renowned as being sadistic, *
ryuuen's entry contains an aura of creepy and almost downright wrong that gives him the win. Good luck to both duelers in the future!

Eternityhero ~
Darkstampede has an interesting style and Vince's drunken expressions are absolutely hilarious. The unclean lineart detracts from your duel, though, and some sections are hard to understand. ~
Eternityhero's duel is cleaner and easier to read and also contains more entertaining dialogue. Also, the way ~
Eternityhero's duel is set up is an interesting take on how to do a duel. However, i suggest he add in more of the actual fight to the entry next time.

kaitoiscool Wins by default as no entry was found by the opponent.
critique: Short, simple but very amusing. Could have used some more interesting camera angles but in a humorous one pager it's not too detrimental. Some suggested background shapes can also make the comic feel more complete. Good use of slim, empty panels to mark the passage of time.

YamiRedPen Even after years in SDL, it's great to see the duelers still have innovated ideas to work within their entries. Both duelers created interesting and humorous images that I found really enjoyable to review. In the end, the decision went to Yamiredped for her creativity in having the beams of a building to become the obsacle of the match. Nice work from both artists and I'm looking forward to see more of these two again in SDL.

RiverNinj4 River could put a little bit more detail within the background and foreground to add to the image. The fight is playful but more could be added to bring the image a little more action. Such as line movement, flying debris, or spit/blood coming out from the opponent's mouth while being kicked in the face. The perspective of the OCs arms are off so try working on that a bit. Hiyawoffa created a rough and violent fight and scene which is great but the details get lost in the thin lines used. Try varying the thickness of your lines and the pens you use. Also, the perspective of the scene could use more depth. Try exaggerating a bit more while practicing landscapes and scenery to get the feel of it.

Niseng Both entrants had very confusing entries. Tofuderp's entry took my eyes a minute to focus in on the face/body on the background and I had no idea what was going on in the foreground, to be honest. I recommend more time for rendering, and using solids to help establish whats closer as opposed to further away. Ninseng, your entry was confusing because you used the SAME grey tone for both characters clothes in a tangled pose, making it hard to make out what limbs belonged to who. But in the end yours had the more clear upperhand.

Nekrus This one was so tough to choose. Both were well-done in their own skill and style. There are a few flaws of perspective and angles in nekrus's image. And rifgocrazy2 has a few odd curves and angles in the positioning of the OCs. But, the flaws aren't really that noticeable for either. The scene is brought to life in different ways for nekrus with the point of view, facial expressions, and lively and dramatic movement of the hair and clothes. rifgocrazy2 brought her scene to life with the vibrant colors and painterly-like strokes and like nekrus with the expressions and line movement of the subjects. Great job to the both of you!

CoFeRoSa Nice work from both sides here. Kiru made good use of contrasts and complimentary colors, and though the back ground is simple it's works well to suggest the setting. The posing of Wilheim is very good though I felt Kampank came out a little flat in comparison. Some of the black lines around him coupled with the side profile are probably to blame. The composition in Coferosa's entry really impressed me. Just the silhouettes show a lot of dynamism and action, while the camera pitch and the clouds add a lot of drama to the image. The close ups also help to add emotion.

Winner: ~
LJS2005 wins for having a clearer story line and more consistent characterisation. Although the ink work got messy at points and made the action difficult to follow, the over all plot of the story was easy to read and had an ending that tied in well to the beginning and gave their meeting significance. Crimsontranquility's entry could have used more back grounds to help the viewer understand the action. The story also was a bit confusing, beginning with Asami being bullied by 2 men, to Asami and Shin beating up those men, to Asami and shin fighting each other. Over all their was just less direction there.

rifgocrazy2 I gotta say I was sold at the intense vibrant colors on this one. The details are quite rough, but it's busy enough that I'm not dissapointed, and it tells me everything I need to know. The roughness actually works better than one would expect, with nice contrast and texture to balance out the background with the characters. Just watch the proportions next time, because the size difference in the picture dictates the winning character is about as big as the opponents head. Kido's entry was a fun one as well with experimentation with depth and stronger details on the characters, but the overall emptiness of the surrounding background detracted from the action.

kidoairaku This match up was a lovely change of pace. I haven't seen many entries before where the main idea of victory was conveyed through body language, in a situation that would otherwise be considered inconclusive. while both entries did well, the approach Kido took in contrast to Wrenatus, I felt was stronger and more interesting.
