CURRENT DUEL WINNERS

[link] VS [link]
25 Nov 2009 - 10 Dec 2009 !
Single strip
Winner: ~FireMonkeys Story worked pretty good and kept a good pace with the character interaction and combat. Checkz3's story had little flaws, but the opponent just had a slight upper hand in both story and comic-form for the entries of this fight.

[link] VS [link]
17 Nov 2009 - 16 Dec 2009 %
regular comic "Death Match"
Winner: ~PuppyAngelXXX Even though both entries presented an equally strong story, the clarity and neatness with which the story was presented was clearly stronger in Puppy's entry. A nice heated color provided more than enough mood in the backdrop to keep the interest up. Hiyawolf's entry needed a lot of polish. With the erratic lines of uniform thickness that didn't conform to the shapes of the characters it was hard to tell at first where the attention needed to be in many of the panels. Puppy's entry, while stronger, could still use some more work in the story part. There were quite a few cliche lines and scenes that really threw off the vibes, so I'd suggest trying to avoid such things for a serious, brutally bloody deathmatch.

SDL Championshis Round 2 Results

Journal Entry: Fri Dec 18, 2009, 5:28 AM

Round 2 has ended and here are all the entries in this round:

[link] VS [link]
8.00 VS 5.67
Winner: =CoFeRoSa

Judge 1: I was pleased to see =CoFeRoSa do a comic instead of the splash page I was expecting. His techniques led to a very interesting comic style and Kampank's entry into the arena was unexpected and charismatic. However, proofing and editing your dialogue will do you well in the future.
Judge 2: CoFeRoSa's painterly approach to comics is working very well for him. The energy and emotion of the match was conveyed fantastically. I'd like to ask that you check your spelling and grammar first, or run it by someone who knows English just in case nothing gets lost in translation, but that's a minor complaint. EcchiSketch, it's super intimidating to go up against CoFeRoSa, so I'm glad you tried to bring the competition as best as you could. You need more work on your panel organization, and should rely less on copy+paste photshop backgrounds (or for that matter, no backgrounds at all.) It was a bit confusing to tell what was going on at times, but once you get some references and really nail down your poses, you'll be good.

[link] VS [link]
7.33 VS 6.67
Winner: ~monkey0toe0man

Judge 1: Though ~Number-Seventeen's series of splash pages were more finished-looking than ~monkey0toe0man's comic, they were lacking in content. Varying your poses and drawing backgrounds instead of relying on speed lines will improve your work, Seventeen.
Judge 2: Gee, I really hate this points system. It makes things like explaining why one piece wins over another more DIFFICULT. Such is the case here. While Number-Seventeen's series of splash-page illustrations is a wonderful departure from the norm, monkey0toe0man's engaging piece pulls ahead. Shidae and Oda Yen's battle is skillfully conveyed with dynamic, accurate poses and a sense of flow. Number-Seventeen's paintings certainly should not be overlooked--however, they could benefit from better composition and poses. monkey0toe0man, polish up your comic, throw in some tone/shading, and you'll dominate.

[link] VS [link]
7.83 VS 9.17
Winner: *Alamus

Judge 1: ~snargo's entry was well-drawn but generally fell flat in terms of characterization and plot development. *Alamus' entry was both well-rendered and created plot points that drew the reader into her comic.
Judge 2: While Snargo's comic duel was drawn in a very pretty manner, it couldn't compete with the sheer ferocity and skillful rendering of Alamus' entry. Alamus's story, artwork, and style all came together for this piece. Snargo, your work is also fantastic, but I suggest utilizing different ways of building up tension or showing action in your poses.

[link] VS [link]
6.83 VS 8.00
Winner: ~Kurasato

Judge 1: I'd first like to say that I'm proud of ~Inxanity for submitting an entry despite being swamped with schoolwork. However, ~Kurasato's entry blew me away. Not only is it well drawn, it incorporates his opponent's backstory as well as developing his own. I hope to see this level of quality continue into the next round, Kurasato.
Judge 2: first off, god damn does it take forever for your pages to load, Kurasato. Inx, I know that time was working against you, and because of that you were unable to do your best work. WITH THAT SAID: Kurasato managed to complete an entry that could stand alone as a short story (holy moly, 22 pages) with its combination of story and art. The pacing was great, and Kurasato managed to integrate both his and his opponent's backstory. Inx, I know what you're capable of, and next time when you're not getting pounded by finals, show me your best.

The next round's match-ups will be posted tomorrow along with the deadline.

Death and Maiming in SDL

Journal Entry: Sun Dec 13, 2009, 1:34 AM

Some duellers have sent notes expressing concerns over the penalties regarding death matches and maiming in duels. We'd like to hear your opinions regarding this topic.

Things to note:

:bulletred:Killing a dueller results in a 30 day probation and a 10 rank demotion. Similarly maiming a dueller will result in 15 day probation and a 10 rank drop.
:bulletred:Any duels due during the probation period will be considered forfeit.

:bulletred:Winning an agreed upon death match duel will earn the dueller a kill charm.

:bulletred:These rules have been mostly unchanged since the inception of SDL, however they aren't well known as we've only recently been putting together a proper and tidy rules section.

These rules were originally created out of concern that a dueller could effectively force another character out of the league or force the artist to change their profile to reflect a major injury.

Recently however, there has been an unexpected amount of interest in official death matches and the rules don't reflect the difference between an honourable match and what essentially is murder.

Your thoughts?
