After seeing the Legendary Samurai in one of his duels, he started his quest to imitate the legendary samurai's sword technique even at his very tender age. After convincing his clan to put him in a rigoruos training and elite samurai schooling, he leaves his clan to challenge the very finest of Japan.

But with his poor mathematics skills, he is often fooled to paying more and is always in the brink of bankruptcy. Kato is also a very gullible person. It was said that he has been tricked by a 4 year-old boy to give his duel earnings for a magic nagajugan that when you wear you will get more wins. Turns out it was just a worn out undergarment that is both not magical and bigger size for him. Kato always tries to look cool and badass when not dueling, but always manages to make a fool of himself right after.

He idolizes Oma Kenzo, thus he has perfected Oma's spin slash and is now trying to perfect a triple sword spin with 3 swords juggled by one arm, a technique he developed and created.
